About the Tour
Óbidos, a UNESCO City of Literature, has history on every corner. On this tour you’ll see the 1,300-year-old castle, the old Moorish and Jewish quarters, Nicolau Chanterene’s Renaissance pietà and the works of Josefa de Óbidos, the 17th-century painter who was the first Portuguese artist exhibited at the Louvre.
You’ll also learn why Óbidos was, for centuries, the “town of queens”: Isabel of Aragon, Leonor of Avis and Catherine of Austria all left a lasting legacy. Queen Leonor opened one of the first Misericórdias here, the oldest charity network in the world.
