Igreja Nossa Senhora do Pópulo in Caldas da Rainha
The Igreja Nossa Senhora do Pópulo in Caldas da Rainha, initially built as a private chapel at the Thermal Hospital, was elevated to the Head Church, due to the rapid growth of the locality and the inclusion of the bell tower and the baptismal font.
Designed by Mestre Mateus Fernandes, one of those responsible for the Imperfect Chapels of the Batalha Monastery, the Nossa Senhora do Pópulo Church dates from the beginning of the XVI century. One of the particularities of this church is that the chancel was built on one of the thermal springs.
Of small dimensions, the church is enormous due to the combination of styles it encompasses, being referred to as one of the first buildings where you can find evidence of the Manueline, and some paintings like the triptych – A Paixão de Cristo. who, both inside and outside, are worth a careful visit.
