Park Pavilions in Caldas da Rainha
The Park Pavilions stand in Parque D. Carlos I, in Caldas da Rainha. Construction began in 1893, to a design by the architect Rodrigo Berquó, administrator of the Thermal Hospital and a key name in the history of the spa town.
The building was meant to be the future D. Carlos Hospital, with wards and other services, while the old hospital would become a bathhouse only.
The Pavilions never served that purpose and, over the years, housed various institutions of the city.
Built facing the lake of Parque D. Carlos I, they represent Berquó’s ambition to put Caldas on a par with Europe’s leading spa towns of the late 19th century.
