Óbidos Lagoon in Foz do Arelho
The Óbidos Lagoon, at Foz do Arelho in Caldas da Rainha, is the largest lagoon system in Portugal and home to a rich variety of wildlife and plants.
Many water and migratory birds can be seen here, and the lagoon is also rich in fish and shellfish.
According to old records, in the Middle Ages the lagoon reached the foot of Óbidos Castle, which gives it its name, and it has played an important commercial role ever since.
