Church of Nossa Senhora do Pópulo in Caldas da Rainha
The Church of Nossa Senhora do Pópulo in Caldas da Rainha was built as the private chapel of the Thermal Hospital and later became the parish church as the town grew, gaining a bell tower and a baptismal font.
It dates from the early 16th century and is the work of Master Mateus Fernandes, one of the builders of the Unfinished Chapels at the Monastery of Batalha. One of its peculiarities is that the main chapel was built over one of the thermal springs.
Small in size, it is rich in styles and is described as one of the first buildings to show signs of the Manueline style, with details inside and out, such as the triptych of The Passion of Christ, that deserve a careful visit.
Visits must be booked through the Hospital and Caldas Museum.
