Praça 5 de Outubro in Caldas da Rainha
Praça 5 de Outubro, in Caldas da Rainha, is known locally as “Praça do Peixe” (Fish Square). It appeared at the end of the 19th century and got its nickname from the fish market that moved here from Praça da Fruta and was held here until fairly recently.
In the early 20th century, one of the city’s most iconic buildings was built on this square: the Teatro Pinheiro Chagas.
Today the square stands out above all for its nightlife, thanks to the many bars around it.
A favourite with young people, it is often the hub of Caldas Late Night, an arts festival held every year. Other shows take place here too, especially in summer.
