Paúl de Tornada in Caldas da Rainha
Paúl de Tornada lies on the bed of the River Tornada, near Caldas da Rainha. It is the main freshwater wetland in Portugal’s Oeste region and one of its most important sites for reedbed birds.
The area is well served by roads and easy to find.
Besides the marsh, where you can watch birds along a well-marked trail, there is an ecological and education centre that runs environmental activities.
Depending on the season, you can see many water birds, including rails, moorhens, coots and the rare purple swamphen, ducks such as teal and mallard, and great cormorants.
